Instructions

  1. Begin with properly fired shelf cone 04 bisque. Moisten a clean sponge and wipe bisque to remove any dust.
  2. Place some FN-008 Brown into a small cup and add a little bit of water to slightly dilute it. It should be the consistency of a coffee cream. Pour this into the vase and roll around to completely coat the interior of the vase. Drain out the excess glaze and keep vase inverted until it has lost its shine. Wipe off any glaze from the outside using a damp sponge. Allow to dry.
  3. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan, apply 1 coat of FN-008 to the outside of the vase.
  4. Apply a second coat of FN-008 Brown to the vase, while the glaze is still wet, wind approximately 5 yards small jute or linen thread around the vase. It is easier to use a banding wheel for this process.
  5. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan, apply another coat of FN-008 Brown over the string.
  6. When the glaze is partially dry, use a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan and apply 1 coat of SC-37 Ivory Tower, adding some SC-5 Tiger Tail to the SC-37 Ivory Tower for a golden look in some areas. Add SC-27 Sour Apple to the SC-37 Ivory Tower to blend in an additional color to some areas of the vase.
  7. It is important to pull the string off when the glaze losses its shine. At this point the glaze is still very wet. If it is pulled when the glaze dries, you loose all the little threads from the string, which makes it more interesting.
  8. Stilt and fire to shelf cone 06.
