Instructions

  1. Begin with properly fired shelf cone 04 bisque.  Moisten a clean sponge and wipe bisque to remove any dust.
  2. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan, apply 3 coats of FN-001 White to the stem of the gourd.
  3. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan, apply 3 coats 3 coats of FN-009 Black Foundations to the body of the gourd.
  4. Use a pen to trace the flower design on to the gourd while the third coat of black is still wet, so the pen mark can make an indent in the glaze.  If the design is drawn after the glaze has dried completely, trace the design by placing a sheet of AC-230 Clay Carbon Paper underneath the flower template.
  5. Condition a CB-110 #10/0 Liner by: dampen the brush in water and squeeze out any excess water. Load the brush with AC-525 Brush Cleaner then squeeze between a paper towel.
  6. Using the conditioned CB-110 #10/0 Script Liner, apply AC-302 Wax Resist over the lines of the flower, and around the flower, paint random swirls as shown in the photo.
  7. Using the end of the CB-110 #10/0 Liner Brush for bigger dots and a toothpick for smaller dots, outline the flower and leaves, and accent the swirls, again referring to the photo of the finished gourd.  I found it best to first dip the toothpick in AC-302 Wax Resist and allow some harden to on the tip before re-dipping - this creates a slightly larger surface for making dots. Dot some AC-302 Wax Resist on the stem of the gourd as well.
  8. Once the AC-302 Wax Resist has dried, paint 2 coats of SC-28 Blue Isle over the gourd, excluding the stem, using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan Brush.
  9. Using a CB-106 #6 Script Liner, apply2 coats of SC-15 Tuxedo to the stem.
  10. Stilt, and fire to cone 06/05
