Instructions

Mug Construction

  1. Create a skull from CD-1178 according to instructions.  You will want to let the greenware set in the mold a little longer than the instructions, creating a thicker form than normally suggested.
  2. Make a clay form according to instructions.
  3. Make a handle for your mug using the pattern.  Create two pieces of clay and meld together for a nice, thick handle.
  4. Cut the greenware skull in half; atach the face side to the mug to attach to the mug using slip.  Smooth the seam lines with water and your finger.
  5. Use a needle tool to create a vent hole in the bottom of the skull. We want air and moisture to escape the skull cavity and we DON'T want air and moisture to force its way out of a trapped compartment!
  6. After the greenware handle gets leather-hard attach to the side of the mug. Score the handle at the two contact points, apply slip and attach.  Smooth seams with water and your finger.
  7. When the mug becomes leather hard, the top drinking edge can be thinned with a fettling knife. Taper the handle around the edges for a slimmer look.
  8. Clean up any rough edges. Allow to dry.
  9. Bisque fire to shelf cone 04/05.

Painting

  1. Using a CB-602 #2 Soft Fan, apply 2 coats of SC-16 Cotton Tail to the skull.
  2. Pencil off a ¼” band from the top of the mug and around the handle.
  3. Apply ¼” masking tape below the pencil line to create a clean edge.
  4. Using a CB-406 #6 Pointed Round, apply 2 coats of SC-16 Cotton Tail to this border. Remover the masking tape after the last coat is applied.
  5. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan, apply 3 coats of SC-93 Honeydew List to the body of the mug.
  6. Using a CB-406 #6 Pointed Round, apply 3 coats of SC-85 Orkid to the remainder of the handle.
  7. With the masking tape, tape off a section on each side of the skull.
  8. Using a dry AC-213 Sponge on a Stick, load the sponge with SC-15 Tuxedo. Tap the SC-15 Tuxedo onto the ST-343 Deco Circles Stamp then press the stamp gently onto the sides of the skull on the mug then remove the tape.
  9. Using a CB-110 #10/0 Liner, apply a border around the skull in a zig-zag pattern of SC-15 Tuxedo and SC-26 Green Thumb.
  10. The flowers in the eyes and on the forehead are made by using a CB-202 #2 Detail Liner, loaded with SC-74 Hot Tamale and applying and lifting of the brush.
  11. Apply a thin wash of SC-74 Hot Tamale on the teeth, wipe back with a damp sponge.
  12. Using a CB-202 #2 Detail Liner, apply a row, 1-2 coats of SC-24 Dandelion then a row of SC-28 Blue Isle around the teeth.
  13. Detail the rest of the skull, rim of the mug and the handle with the following colors; SC-13 Grapel, SC-28 Blue Isle and SC-24 Dandelion.
  14. Detail the skull, rim and handle of the mug with SG-401 Designer Liner. Allow to dry.
  15. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan, apply 3 coats of SC-94 Curry Around to the inside of the mug. Allow to dry.
  16. Apply S-2101 Crystal Clear Brushing. Allow to dry.
  17. Stilt and fire to shelf cone 05/06.
