Foster the lover of art in your little one and enjoy some special creative time together while making a keepsake you'll treasure forever. This project is a great way to connect "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle to art. You might also ask your local library to display your projects when they are done. This project is perfect for children ages two-to-five-year-olds.

1. Begin with properly fired shelf cone 04 bisque. Moisten a clean sponge and wipe the bisque to remove any dust.
2. Referring to the picture of the plate, draw an outline of a butterfly on the back of the plate.
3. Referring to the picture of the plate, draw an outline of an apple on the front of the plate.
4. Make a color wash using SC-11 Blue Yonder and apply the wash with a cotton ball around the apple and butterfly. To make a wash, dip the cotton ball in water and squeeze out the excess water. Then, dip the cotton ball in SC-11 Blue Yonder and swirl it around on the plate.
5. Make a color wash with SC-74 Hot Tamale and apply it to the inside of the apple. Make sure it is lightly applied (the wash should be somewhat watery) so that a red handprint will show up over it.
6. Using a CB-408 #8 Pointed Round paint SC-8 Just Froggy in the leaf portion of the apple.
7. Using a CB-408 #8 Pointed Round, paint 2 coats of SC-33 Fruit of the Vine in the body of the butterfly and two coats of SC-55 Yella Bout It in the wings.
8. Time for handprints, fingerprints and footprints. Using SC-74 Hot Tamale, paint your child's hand and place it in the center of the apple.
9. Using SC-33 Fruit of the Vine, paint your child's feet (one at a time) and place one in each of the butterfly's wings.
10. To make a little caterpillar, dip your child's fingers (or yours) in SC-8 Just Froggy and make consecutive fingerprints in two joining-shapes. Add a red SC-74 Hot Tamale thumbprint to one end of the caterpillar to make a head.
11. Using a CB-408 #8 Pointed Round, apply SC-41 Brown Cow to the stem of your apple.
12. Using a CB-110 #10/0 Thin Liner Brush and SC-15 Tuxedo diluted with water, outline your apple, leaf, stem and your butterfly wings. Also, add antennae to your butterfly as well as feet, a face, antennae and caterpillar “fuzz” to your fingerprint caterpillar.
13. Pencil in your writing. The Front of the plate should read:"He/She ate and he/she ate and ate." The Back of the plate should read:"until he/she was't a little caterpillar anymore." Use CB-110 #10/0 Thin Liner Brush with SC-15 Tuxedo and paint over your letters.
14. With the same liner brush, personalize your piece by including the child's name and date somewhere on the piece.
