Instructions

  1. Prepare a ¼" slab slightly larger than the size for the finished plaque.  Pre-firing, the finished plaques were 6”x12”.
  2. With an assortment of stamps to create the piece.  Do not expect letters to be perfectly lined up – it’s part of the charm!
  3. Once finished decorating the plaque, use the Quilting Ruler as a template and cut the plaque with the fettling knife.
  4. If hanging holes are desired, use a straw to punch out the clay where needed.
  5. Plaques should be sandwiched between layers of sheetrock in order to dry flat.  Make sure the edges of the sheetrock have been taped, as sheetrock dust and clay do not mix.  Our sheetrock pieces are approximately 8” x12 ½”, which seems to be a good size. Allow the plaques to dry for 1-2 weeks before firing.
  6. Fire to cone 04 after plaques are completely dry.
  7. The AC-219 Designer Bottle with Writer Tip is the easiest way to fill in letters – just fill with the desired Stroke & Coat color, and squeeze color in each letter – no additional coating necessary.  Depending on the font, you may need to use a CB-110 #10/0 Liner brush to work color in the smaller areas. Paint the letters first, and clean up the surrounding areas with a cotton swab and water as necessary.
  8. Once the letters are painted, apply 2 coats of CG-972 Dragon’s Breath to the background and back of the plaque.  Use a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan brush on the back, and a CB-406 #6 Pointed Round to paint in around the letters.
  9. Do not clear glaze.
  10. Stilt, and fire to cone 06/05.
