    SW-151 Olive Float over SW-109 Capri Blue is dominated by the pools of greenish-blue dots, spots, and patches.

    2017 05 monthly combo

    Interaction:

    SW-153 Indigo Rain over SW-134 Eggplant: Horizontal Round Chip - Indigo Rain's white matte base darkens from the Eggplant below, but the Eggplant does not blend with the glaze above. Vertical Standing Tile (center of second image) - the glazes blend more, creating a greenish-gray float (especially on  raised surfaces (see mug below)). The crystals block the white matte glazes from developing surface immediately below where they bloom, which contributes to additional development of the greenish-gray float.

    3 coats of SW-134 Eggplant were brushed on ⅔ of the tile, from the bottom-up.

    Allowing for Eggplant to dry, 3 coats of SW-153 Indigo Rain were brushed on ⅔ of the tile, from the top-down.

    Interaction:

    SW-154 Shipwreck over SW-107 Dunes creates intermingling and movement with the two glazes, producing streams of flowing color. Blues become muted, turn a bluish-green and the brown crystals appear as a rusty highlight.  Chip was fired flat; vertical pieces really encourage much more blending and movement (scroll down to see the vertical tile in the center of the banner image).

    3 coats of SW-107 Dunes were brushed on ⅔ of the tile, from the bottom-up.

    Allowing for Dunes to dry, 3 coats of SW-154 Shipwreck were brushed on ⅔ of the tile, from the top-down.

    Interaction:

    SW-120 Northern Woods over SW-155 Winter Wood restricts and subdues the crystal from developing. On a large surface (the vase featured in the front-page banner) the Northern Woods flows more and creates isolated spots that glisten through the dark surroundings.

    3 coats of SW-155 Winter Wood were brushed on ⅔ of the tile, from the top-down .

    Allowing for Winter Wood to dry, 3 coats of SW-120 Northern Woods were brushed on ⅔ of the tile, from the bottom-up.

    Interaction:

    SW-111 Wrought Iron over SW-163 Soft Red Matte turns matte when it soaks into the red matte. Waves form as the glaze moves with the crests of each wave turning glossy.

    Allowing for the Soft Red Matte to dry, 3 coats of SW-111 Wrought Iron were brushed on ⅔ of the tile, from the bottom-up.

    Interaction:

    SW-148 Lime Shower over SW-112 Tiger's Eye produces an semi-opaque mixture of jade and emerald with bursts of green and white flecks. Finishes to a smooth even texture, in which all areas are glossy  The mixture of SW-148 Lime Shower and SW-112 Tiger's Eye is a glaze combination that has a lot natural movement but is stable enough that it will not run off a vertical surface. 

    Process:
    3 coats of SW-148 Lime Shower were brushed to the left ⅔ of the tile.

    Allowing for the Lime Shower to dry, 3 coats of SW-112 Tiger's Eye were brushed to the right ⅔ of the tile.

  • sw-125 Purple mint over sw-145 Tea Dust

    Interaction:

    SW-125 Purple Mint over SW-145 Tea Dust produces an opaque mixture of ochres and umbers with bursts of subtle red-purple which floats on the surface. Finishes to a smooth, mottled finish, in which some areas are glossy while others are matte. The mixture of SW-125 Purple Mint and SW-145 Tea Dust is a glaze combination that has little natural movement and is stable enough that it will not run off a vertical surface. 

    Process:
    3 coats of SW-145 Tea Dust were brushed to the left ⅔ of the tile.

    Allowing for the Tea Dust to dry, 3 coats of SW-125 Purple Mint were brushed to the right ⅔ of the tile.

  • sw-109 Capri blue under sw-146 Aurora Green

    Interaction:

    SW-146 Aurora Green over SW-109 Capri Blue produces an opaque mixture of green and blue hues with bursts of bark blue and rutile crystals created from the crystals in SW-146 Aurora Green. Finishes to a smooth, glossy finish while slightly breaking over texture on the surface, as shown. Due to the mixture of SW-146 Aurora Green and SW-109 Capri Blue, this glaze combination has some movement, but it is stable enough that it will not run off a vertical surface.

    Process:
    3 coats of SW-109 Capri Blue were brushed to the left ⅔ of the tile.

    Allowing for the Capri Blue to dry, 3 coats of SW-146 Aurora Green were brushed to the right ⅔ of the tile.

    Interaction:

    SW-140 Black Matte over SW-146 Aurora Green produces an opaque mixture of midnight blue to aqua and green hues created from the crystals in SW-146 Aurora Green. Finishes to a smooth, glossy finish. Due to the mixture of SW-146 Aurora Green and SW-140 Black Matte, this glaze combination has some movement, but it is stable enough that it will not run off a vertical surface.

    Process:
    3 coats of SW-146 Aurora Green were brushed to the left ⅔ of the tile.

    Allowing for the Aurora Green to dry, 3 coats of SW-140 Black Matte were brushed to the right ⅔ of the tile, being careful to keep crystals in place (fully load your brush and without dragging the glaze over SW-146 Aurora Green).

  • sw128 Cordovan under sw401 Mayco Flux

    Interaction:

    SW-401 Mayco Flux over SW-128 Cordovan produces an opaque mixture of light to dark golden hues with rutile-looking variations. Finishes to a smooth, glossy finish. Due to the use of SW-401 Mayco Flux, this glaze combination has some movement, but it is stable enough that it will not run off a vertical surface.

    Process:
    3 coats of SW-128 Cordovan were brushed to the bottom ⅔ of the tile.

    Allowing for the Cordovan to dry, 3 coats of SW-401 Mayco Flux were brushed to the top ⅔ of the tile.

  • sw144 Tea Dust under sw001 SW Clear

    Interaction:

    SW-001 Stoneware Clear over SW-144 Lava Rock produces a semi-transparent cobalt hue mottled with rutile breaking. This combo is semi-transparent when pooling and will slighty break over surface texture to reveal clay body characteristics. Finishes to a smooth, glossy finish. This glaze combination has some movement, but it is stable enough that it will not run off a vertical surface.

    Process:
    3 coats of SW-144 Lava Rock were brushed to the left ⅔ of the tile.

    Allowing for the Lava Rock to dry, 3 coats of SW-001 Stoneware Clear were brushed to the right ⅔ of the tile.

    Interaction:

    SW-134 Eggplant over SW-130 Copper Jade will produce a medley of red-brown hues and slate-blue flashes produced by the Eggplant. This combo is completely opaque, and will slighty break over surface texture to reveal surface characteristics. Finishes to a smooth, glossy finish. This glaze combination has some movement, but it is stable enough that it will not run off a vertical surface.

    Process:
    3 coats of SW-130 Copper Jade were brushed to the left ⅔ of the tile.

    Allowing for the Copper Jade to dry, 3 coats of SW-134 Eggplant were brushed to the right ⅔ of the tile.

  • sw119 Cinnabar under sw135 Wintergreen

    Interaction:

    SW-135 Wintergreen over SW-119 Cinnabar will produce a mottle of red marron hues and a light frosting of green flashes produced by the Wintergreen. Throughout the base, there are bursts of solid marron red. This combo is completely opaque, but will settle around surface texture. Finishes to a textured satin and has bursts of gloss where red spots are visable. This glaze combination has some movement, but it is stable enough that it will not run off a vertical surface.

    Process:
    3 coats of SW-119 Cinnabar were brushed to the left ⅔ of the tile.

    Allowing for the Cinnabar to dry, 3 coats of SW-135 Wintergreen were brushed to the right ⅔ of the tile.

    Interaction:

    SW-206 Melon over SW-110 Oyster will produce a mottle of orange and cream hues with flashes of gray variations. Where the combo breaks over texture, the clay body is visible through the sheer orange with collections of cream-gray shades in textured areas. Finishes to a smooth feel and fluxes where the Oyster is heavy. The combo has movement but it is stable enough that it will not run off a vertical surface. 

    Process:
    3 coats of SW-206 Melon were brushed to the right ⅔ of the tile.

    Allowing for the Melon to dry, 3 coats of SW-110 Oyster were brushed to the left ⅔ of the tile.

    Cone 6 Oxidation, white stoneware body, fired vertically. Horizontal surfaces may yield a more dapple, cream-gray hue.

    Interaction:

    Robin's Egg over will produce a slightly textured, mottle of violet and blue hues with flashes of light green hue. Where the combo breaks over texture, the violet color deepens with minimal clay body peeking through. Finishes to a slightly textured satin feel and fluxes where the Robin's Egg is heavy. The combo has movement but it is stable enough that it will not run off a vertical surface. 

    Process:
    3 coats of SW-207 Chambray were brushed to the right ⅔ of the tile.

    Allowing for the Chambray to dry, 3 coats of SW-116 Robin's Egg were brushed to the left ⅔ of the tile.

    Interaction:

    Mirror Black over Wintergreen will produce a mottle of golden brown with flashes of a gray-slate hue. Where the combo breaks over texture, a light brown-cream color is more visible. Finishes to a satin feel and fluxes where the Mirror Black is heavy. The combo has movement but it is stable enough tht it will not run off a vertical surface. 

    Process:
    3 coats of SW-135 Wintergreen were brushed to the right ⅔ of the tile.

    Allowing for the Wintergreen to dry, 3 coats of SW-132 Mirror Black were brushed to the left ⅔ of the tile.

    Cone 6 Oxidation, white stoneware body, fired vertically. Horizontal surfaces may yield a more dapple, golden hue.

    Interaction:

    Storm Gray over Sea Salt will produce a variegated and lustrous gray with ivory patterning amongst crystal bursts from Sea Salt. Where the combo breaks over texture, more ivory is exposed with an ovrlay of variegated gray. Finishes to a smooth feel and fluxes where the glaze is heavy. This combo has movement but it is stable enough that it willnot run off a vertical surface. 

    Process:
    3 coats of SW-118 Sea Salt were brushed to the left ⅔ of the tile.

    Allowing for the Sea Salt to dry, 3 coats of SW-137 Storm Gray were brushed over the right ⅔ of the tile.

    Cone 6 Oxidation, white stoneware body, fired vertically. Horizontal surfaces may yield more variations of gray overlay.

    Interaction:

    Emerald over Smoke will produce a tessellation of blue, browns, and green hues. Where the combo breaks over texture, more brown hues are exposed with an overlay of blue and green shades showing. Finished to a smooth feel and fluxes where the Smoke is heavy. This combo has movement but is stable enough that it wil not run off a vertical surface. 

    Process:

    3 coats of SW-121 Smoke were brushed to the right ⅔ of the tile.

    Allowing for the Smoke to dry, 3 coats of SW-210 Emerald were brushed over the left ⅔ of the tile.

    Cone 6 Oxidation, white stoneware body, fired vertically. Horizontal surfaces may yield more variations of blue hues with brown overlay.

    Interaction:

    Olivine over Charcoal will produce a tessellation of blue, browns,and green hues. Where the combo breaks over texture, clay surface characteristics are visible with an overlay of browns and blue colors showing. Finished to a smooth feel and fluxes where the Olivine is heavy. The combo has movement but it is stable enough that it will not run off of a vertical surface. 

    Process:

    While Patina over Cobblestone are two glazes primarily fired to cone 06, the Patina results alone are very intriguing. It runs down the rim to create a creamy beige edge, and where it pools in the center of the plate, a crystalline-like green pattern develops.

    Process:
    3 coats of SG-202 White Cobblestone were brushed on the bottom  ⅔ of the plate.

    Allowing for the Cobblestone to dry, 3 coats of EL-123 Patina were brushed to the top ⅔ of the plate.

    Cone 6 Oxidation, white stoneware body, fired horizontally. Vertical surfaces may yield more movement and interaction.

    Cinnabar over Blue Surf forms discrete blue crystals and green pools that look like reptile skin.

    Process:

    Maycoshino over Frost Blue creates the Frost Blue to turn a glossy dark green-blue with stretches of golden matte micro-crystals forming throughout.

    Allowing for the Frost Blue to dry, 3 coats of SW-122 Maycoshino were brushed to the top ⅔ of the plate.

    Honeycomb over Cinnabar creates a cinnamon brown develop with creamy spots and crystals forming beneath.

    Smoke over Speckled Plum brings about a taupe green-brown coat with flecks of copper peering through.

    Interaction: 

    Green Opal over Black Walnut causes a development of a fine medium pixelation pattern with the Green Opal evolving to a bluish-green.

    Allowing for the Black Walnut to dry, 3 coats of SW-253 Green Opal were brushed over the top ⅔ of the plate.

    Black Walnut over Green Opal causes strands of gold to form within sharply defined blue streaks.

    Green Tea over Blue Surf creates a light blue float atop of the Green Tea.

    Reversing the process from the previous plate, Sea Salt over Purple Mint results in a purple float on the Purple Mint with the crystals turning into a blue ice: you can actually see depth as you would looking through ice on a frozen pond.

    Process:

    3 coats of SW-125 Purple Mint were brushed on the bottom ⅔ of the plate.

    Allowing for the Purple Mint to dry, 3 coats of SW-118 Sea Salt were brushed to the top ⅔ of the plate.

    Purple Mint over Sea Salt pulls green tones into the Sea Salt and allows for a slightly greater expansion of the Sea Salt crystals. The crystals produced are a greenish blue.

    3 coats of SW-118 Sea Salt were brushed on the bottom ⅔ of the plate.

    Allowing for the Sea Salt to dry, 3 coats of SW-125 Purple Mint were brushed to the top ⅔ of the plate.
