Instructions

  1. Begin with properly fired shelf cone 04 bisque. Moisten a clean sponge and wipe bisque to remove any dust.
  2. Remove the stopper from bottom of birdhouse.
  3. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan, apply 1 coat of FN-001 White to the center (body area) of the birdhouse.
  4. Print the patterns on a laser copier on a dark setting (the darker you can make the print - the better).  The laser print ink acts as a resist - repelling the Iron Wash while the white areas absorb the pigment.
  5. Cut the rectangular black area to fit the body are of the birdhouse. Also cut out the area for the perch.
  6. The colors and Iron Wash are applied to the printed paper, which in essence creates a decal to be applied to your project.
  7. Using a CB-110 #10/0 Liner, apply slightly thinned SW-301 Iron Wash over the white areas in the pattern. If the Iron Wash adheres to the black areas add a little more water to your brush. Be careful with the amount of water applied as too much water will result in light transfer. Do not pre mix the water with the SW-301 Iron Wash. Allow the paper to dry.
  8. After the SW-301 Iron Wash is on the paper and is dry, Using a CB-106 #6 Script Liner, apply 1 coat of SC-24 Dandelion to the flowers, and SC-27 Sour Apple to the leaves and SC-11 Blue Yonder to the birds. Allow these colors to dry.
  9. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan, apply 1 coat FN-001 White to the center (body area) of the birdhouse. Note: this area should not be dry before going to the next two steps.
  10. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan, apply a heavy coat of FN-001 White over the paper image. Do not over brush as this may cause the colors and Iron Wash to smear.
  11. Apply the paper to the birdhouse starting at the opening and continue around. Let stay for a moment then lightly press to remove any air bubbles. Clean up any glaze that may seep out from the pattern. Allow to dry completely, over night is best.
  12. Remove the paper pattern. After removing the paper, check for light areas, if needed re-apply the SW-301 Iron Wash using CB-110 #10/0 Liner.
  13. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan, apply 2 coats of S-2726 Cheetah to the roof area.
  14. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan and a CB-106 #6 Script Liner, apply 1 coat of SC-77 Glo-Worm to the roof, perch and bottom trim of the birdhouse. Allow to dry.
  15. Stilt and fire to shelf cone 05/06.
