Instructions

Construction

  1. With a rolling pin or a slab roller, roll out a piece of cone 5/6 clay slab approximately ¼” thick on a piece of canvas.
  2. Using the MT-002 Wood Grain Mat, roll texture into slab.
  3. Using the template cut out 6 of each size petals with a needle tool.
  4. Soften edges of petals with a damp sponge and shape each petal to desired form.
  5. Roll out a ¼” thick slab cone 5/6 clay and cut out two 5” diameter circles.
  6. On one of the slab circles, press in clay with the back of the needle tool to get a recessed textured.
  7. Place textured circle (texture side down) into the CD-776 Circle Slump Mold. Pat into the mold with a sandbag.
  8. Using the other circle as a base, score and slip the petals together starting with the largest petals on the outside and moving to the smaller petals on the inside.
  9. Drill 2 holes in the center of the flower. This will help for venting as well as allow for the flower to be hung on the wall after being glazed.
  10. Pop the center out of CD-776 Circle Slump and attach to the center of the flower.
  11. Using a slip trailer, dot each circle texture on the center of the flower.
  12. Allow for flower to completely dry.
  13. Bisque fire to shelf cone 04.

Painting

  1. Begin with properly fired shelf cone 04 bisque.  Moisten a clean sponge and wipe bisque to remove any dust.
  2. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan, apply a coat of UG-50 Jet black.  With a damp Sponge, wipe black leaving the color in the deep crevices to antique the piece.
  3. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan, apply 3 coats of SW-252 Blue Opal to the outer petals and then 1 coat SW-250 White Opal. Allow for glaze to completely dry before applying the next coat.
  4. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan, apply 2 coats SW-252 Blue Opal to the middle petals,  and then 2 coats SW-250 White Opal. Allow for glaze to completely dry before applying the next coat.
  5. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan, apply 3 coats SW-250 White Opal to center petals. Allow for glaze to completely dry before applying the next coat.
  6. Using a CB-106 #6 Script Liner, apply 1 coat SW-252 Blue Opal to the edge of the petals.
  7. Using aCB-106 #6 Script Liner, apply SC-88 TuTu Tango to each slip trailed dot.
  8. Outline each dot with SG-401 Black Designer Liner.
  9. Using a CB-604 Soft Fan, apply 3 coats of SW-250 White Opal to the flower center.
  10. With a damp sponge, wipe off any excess glaze off the back of the flower.
  11. Place on a high-fired kiln washed kiln shelf.
  12. Do Not Stilt and make sure the flower is not hanging over the kiln shelf.
