Instructions

  1. Begin with cleaning all glass with Glass Cleaner.
  2. Cut out the pattern (skull heads and bones) following the solid line.
  3. Brush rubber cement on the White Opaque Glass, Clear Glass and the back of the skull patterns. Allow rubber cement to sit, but not dry completely.
  4. Affix the paper patterns onto the rubber cement side of the White Opaque Glass and Clear Glass.
  5. Repeat steps #2 & #3 for the bones. Allow to dry.
  6. Using the Ring Saw (or Glass Cutter), cut out the skulls and bones. Clean glass pieces with glass cleaner. Allow to dry completely.
  7. Using CB-404 #4 Pointed Round, apply one light coat of SG-406 Brown to the edges of the bones.
  8. Lighty cover AC-213 Sponge on a Stick with SG-401 Black. Gently tamp the sponge onto ST-121 Butterfly Stamp. You'll want to coat all the raised portions of the stamp without oversaturating the stamp surface, which will allow for a crisp design from the stamp.
  9. Gently press ST-121 Butterfly Stamp onto the white skull (see photo or suggested placement), then lift directly upwards. Avoid shifting or sliding the stamp - to prevent a blurred image. Allow to dry completely.
  10. Repeat step #9 using ST-345 Large Deco Circles to create the eyes.

For steps 11 through 19 you may apply Designer Liner directly from the bottle or use CB-404 #4 Pointed Round:

  11. Create the nose (upside-down heart shape) using SG-401 Black.
  12. Apply dots around the nose using SG-408 Orange.
  13. Fill in the eye flowers with SG-408 Orange.
  14. Butterfly wings: apply SG-410 Bright Blue to the upper part of the wing, SG-404 Blue to the lower part.
  15. Add SG-403 Red to the middle portion of the wings.
  16. Add SG-409 Bright Green to the butterfly body.
  17. Apply SG-407 Yellow to the border around the butterfly.
  18. Draw a heart in the chin area with SG-408 Orange.
  19. Apply dots over the eyes and to the sides of the teeth using SG-410 Bright Blue
  20. Use the metal applicator tip to draw the teeth using SG-403 Red.
  21. Using the Metal Applicator Tip, draw a swirl vine-like graphic on each side of the Orange heart with SG-405 Green.
  22. Using the Metal Applicator Tip, draw spirals to the cheek areas with SG-404 Blue.
  23. Using CB-404 #4 Pointed Round, draw leaves to the right and left sides of the butterfly (on forehead) by loading the brush head with SG-405 Green and tipping in SG-409 Bright Green. Apply pressure and with one stroke, the leaves will be dual-toned. Allow to dry.
  24. Using the same colors and technique from above, draw pedals in between the nose and the teeth. Allow to dry.
  25. Using SG-401 Black, outline the leaves and add a center vein and stem. Allow to dry.
  26. On top of Thin Fire Paper, place the White Opaque Glass skull and bones in the kiln. Place the Clear Glass skull and bones on top of the White Opaque Glass.
  27. Fuse fire. We used the firing schedule below, for your reference. *Please remember that any "generic" firing schedule is meant as a "starting point". Your project, your kiln and your desired results are all variables may cause for adjustments to this schedule. Remember to fuse and anneal for the thickest part of the glass.
  28. Using 1/4" Hallow Diamond Drill Bit, drill three holes in the chin and one hole in the top of the head. Also, drill a hole in each of the bones.
  29. With the 1.5" rings, attach the bones to the chin.
  30. Attach the 1" ring to the top of the head for hanging.

Note: all firing schedules are subject to modification based on the type of project, materials variations, your kiln's "personality", etc. Fuse and anneal for the thickest part of the glass.
