Instructions

  1. Begin with properly fired shelf cone 04 bisque.  Moisten a clean sponge and wipe bisque to remove any dust.
  2. With a pencil and AC-230 Clay Carbon Paper, trace on the turkey pattern.
  3. Use SG-406 Brown Designer Liner to outline the whole turkey except the detail lines on the top of the tail feathers and the detail lines on the clusters of feathers throughout the turkey’s body. You will add these lines once you have the underglaze on and dried.
  4. All the underglazes will be applied in a heavy one-coat manner blending the colors as they meet. Note: the Underglaze should not be dripping from the brush. The brush should just be loaded.
  5. Using a CB-406 #6 Pointed Round, apply UG-31 Chocolate to the neck, under the chin, and the bottom of the first row of feather clusters.
  6. Using a RB-104 #4 Liner and a CB-404 #4 Pointed Round, apply UG-46 Bright Yellow to all places around the face and parts of the neck that should be highlighted.  *Example: pay attention to the top of the eyelid, under the eye/cheek area this includes the very top of the head, and parts of the neck.
  7. Using a RB-104 #4 Liner, apply UG-46 Bright Yellow to the beak.
  8. Using a RB-104 #4 Liner, apply UG-208 Dragon Red to the wattle of the turkey.
  9. Now onto the rows of clustered feathers. The first set that has already had UG-31 Chocolate applied to at the bottom of the cluster. Using a CB-406 #6 Pointed Round add UG-204 Orange in the middle to top section with. While that is still a little damp add UG-46 Bright Yellow to highlight this area.
  10. Using a CB-406 #6 Pointed Round, apply UG-208 Dragon Red and UG-204 Orange in a dappling manor to the next section, a single section. Go between the two colors until you have the desired effect.
  11. The next section is the larger single part. Using a CB-404 #4  Pointed Round, start with UG-31 Chocolate at the bottom and move to the top getting lighter with the UG-31 Chocolate at the top. Use UG-212 Carmel over the UG-31 Chocolate to lighten it and give it a highlight.
  12. The single square like feather row is next.  Using a CB-404 #4 Pointed Round, apply UG-204 Orange on the bottom of all of them. On the top of them use UG-208 Dragon Red blending the two together.
  13. The final row of tail feathers will all be blended as you move through the colors. Try not to muddy up the feathers. Use strokes from the bottom to the top to give it a feathered look. The order of the underglaze is UG-100 Terra Cotta, UG-208 Dragon Red, and UG-46 Bright Yellow.
  14. Using a CB-200 #0 Detail, apply UG-209 Jade to the eye of the turkey. Use a CB-110 #10/0 Liner with UG-46 Bright Yellow to give the eye a highlight at the bottom. Use the same Brush to make the pupil with UG-50 Jet Black. Once that is dry add a very small dot of UG-46 Bright Yellow to highlight the pupil.
  15. Make sure the turkey is completely dry. Go over the parts now and add the details with the SG-406 Brown Designer Liner use the pattern as a reference. Allow to dry.
  16. Place some of the following colors on a palette: UG-31 Chocolate, UG-204 Orange, UG-46 Bright Yellow, and UG-208 Dragon Red. Mix one color at a time with some AC-310 Silkscreen Medium to the consistency of peanut butter, using a pallet knife. You may have to add more of the Screen Printing Medium a little at a time to get the right consistency.
  17. Layer the colors of the underglazes as you print them onto the platter and switching the designs as you move around. Use your finger to apply the color to the Screen Prints. Allow to dry completely.
  18. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan apply 2 coats of S-2101 Crystal Clear Brushing glaze on the top side of the platter. It is very important the design work is dry because it will smear if you are to soon in applying the glaze.
  19. With a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan apply three coats of FN-29 Rich Chocolate to the back of the platter. Allow to dry.
  20. Stilt and fire to shelf cone 06/05.
