Instructions

  1. Begin with properly fired shelf cone 04 bisque.  Moisten a clean sponge and wipe bisque to remove any dust.
  2. Place some FN-009 Black into a small cup and add a little bit of water to slightly dilute it (about 3 parts glaze and 1 part water). It should be the consistency of a coffee cream. Pour this into the vase and roll around to completely coat the interior of the vase. Drain out the excess glaze and keep the vase inverted until it has lost its shine. Wipe off any glaze from the outside using a damp sponge. Allow to dry.
  3. Transfer the design onto the vase using a pencil and AC-230 Clay Carbon Paper. Use scissors to trim the pattern for ease of placing the pattern to the vase.
  4. Note* This step can be omitted if you want a white/red poppy flower.  Using a CB-406 #6 Pointed Round loaded with UG-204 Orange, apply 1 thin coat to the petals and the bud of the poppy.
  5. Using the same brush apply thinned UG-22 Spring Green to the stems and leaf.  This color can be uneven and applied in a “watercolor” fashion. You should be able to see the bisque underneath the color.
  6. Moisten a CB-404 #4 Pointed Round with water, remove excess water by blotting it on a paper towel and then tip the brush in UG-206 Fire Engine Red. Shade the edges of the poppy petals as well as the folds on the petals holding the brush parallel to the ware.  Paint the bud in the same manner.
  7. Detail the petals with a CB-110 #10/0 Liner loaded with UG-207 Flame Red. The detailing should have variances of thin and thickness to the lines as you paint. The line should be heavier where there is fold in the petal. A  “nervous” dot or line can be used when detailing the folds of the petals.
  8. Detail the leaves and stems with UG-211 Olive and UG-91 True Teal using a CB-110 #10/0 Liner and CB-404 #4 Pointed Round. Paint in dots of color in the stems. Paint in the veins in the leaves as well. Use the UG-91 True Teal more where the shadows are behind the stems on the leaves.
  9. Condition a CB-404 #4 Pointed Round by: dampen the brush in water and squeeze out any excess water. Load the brush with AC-525 Brush Cleaner then squeeze between a paper towel.
  10. Apply 1 good heavy coat of AC-302 Wax Resist over the design of the poppy, stems, bud and leaf of the pattern. Be careful not to puddle too much wax on the design to where it will run off the pattern onto the background.   Be careful to keep the wax just off the edge of the pattern. If any wax gets onto the unpainted ware, it will show after painting the background and firing. Wash the brush in warm water and AC-525 Brush Cleaner after using the wax.  Let the wax dry well before next step.
  11. To the centers of the poppy apply a thin coat of UG-211 Olive darkened with UG-50 Jet Black using CB-404 #4 Pointed Round. Detail the sections to the center with the same color using CB-110 #10/0 Liner. Dot in the stigmas using the end of a small brush loaded with UG-50 Jet Black. Keep the dots uneven while placing them around the center of the flower. Some of the stamen’s stigma may overlap onto the center. Let dry.
  12. In a plastic cup pour the contents of the UG-50 Jet Black. Add 1½  tablespoons of C-300 Matt Transparent to the Jet Black and mix well!  Moisten a Silk Decorating Sponge with water and remove any excess by squeezing it into a paper towel. Place some color onto a tile.  Load the Silk Decorating Sponge with color. Apply 3-4 coats of color to the background of the vase using a stippling motion. This should produce a fine beaded texture to the background. Try not to apply color over the waxed areas the design, but if you do, remove any color using a moistened brush loaded with water after each coat and before it has dried.
  13. Mark off a border on the neck of the vase about ¾” in width.  Apply 3 coats of S-2101 Crystal Clear Brushing to the band on the neck of the vase allowing drying time between coats. Allow to dry.
  14. Stilt and fire the piece to shelf cone 04.
