Instructions

  1. Begin with properly fired shelf cone 04 bisque.  Moisten a clean sponge and wipe bisque to remove any dust.
  2. Place S-2101 Crystal Clear Brushing Glaze into a small cup and add water to slightly dilute (about 3 parts glaze and 1 part water). It should be the consistency of coffee cream. Pour the diluted glaze into the vase and roll around to completely coat the interior of the vase. Drain out the excess glaze and keep vase inverted until the glaze has lost its shine. Wipe off any glaze from the outside of the vase using a damp sponge.
  3. With a pencil and AC-230 Clay Carbon Paper trace the outline only of the turtle and the line between the rocks and the water.  After the silhouette is transferred, cut the turtle out from the template.
  4. Using a CB-404 #4 Pointed Round, fill the turtle’s silhouette with 2 coats of EL-130 Sea Green.
  5. While the glaze is still wet, line the turtle pattern up and use a pen to draw over the lines in the pattern, making an indent in the wet glaze underneath.
  6. Continuing with the CB-404 #4 Pointed Round brush, apply 2 coats of SG-202 White Cobblestones on the lower half of the turtle shell and 3 coats on the turtle’s chin.
  7. Using a CB-110 #10/0 Liner, apply 1 good coat of SC-24 Dandelion on the following areas: The bottom half of the turtle’s shell, the front edge of the turtle’s flippers, around each of the turtle’s eyes, the area below the turtle’s mouth, and the lighter area on the turtle’s face between the mouth and nostrils (refer to the photo).
  8. Condition a CB-110 #10/0 Liner by: dampen the brush in water and squeeze out any excess water. Load the brush with AC-525 Brush Cleaner then squeeze between a paper towel.
  9. Using a CB-110 #10/0 Liner, apply a coat of AC-302 Wax Resist to the lines on the turtle’s flippers, the lines on the upper half of the turtle’s shell, and the lines on the turtle’s face.  Above the mouth, over the nostrils, and above the eyes, use wax resist on the tip of the brush only, and dot wax resist in these areas rather than creating a continuous line.  Brush wax resist over the areas painted with Dandelion on the turtle’s flippers, around the eyes, and on the front of the face.
  10. Using a CB-404 #4 Pointed Round, apply 1 coat of EL-137 Black Adventurine to the turtle’s upper shell, flippers, and head.  Apply a second coat to the turtle’s eyes and nostrils.
  11. Using a CB-404 #4 Pointed Round, apply 1 coat of CG-780 Mystic Jade on the lower half of the background of the vase.  Randomly add 2-3 coats of CG-780 Mystic Jade in other areas around the lower half of the vase. Add areas with 2 coats of CG 786 Obsidian around and overflowing the CG-780 Mystic Jade – the combination should look like layers of rocks, lichen, and algae.
  12. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan, apply 1 coat EL-134 Mirror Blue, and 2 coats EL-136 Lapis Lagoon to the upper background of the vase.
  13. Stilt the back of the vase and fire to shelf cone 06, with the vase laying flat on the back of the vase to prevent the Elements in the background from flowing in to the turtle.
