Instructions

  1. Begin with properly fired shelf cone 04 bisque. Use a Dremel Drill with a carbide bit to drill a ¼” hole in the plate a 1/2” above the center foot of the plate. Moisten a clean sponge and wipe bisque pieces to remove any dust.
  2. Using CB-604 Soft Fan to apply 2 coats of FN-01 White to the clay canvas. Using the same brush to apply 3-4 Coats of FN-304 Black Velvet to the entire plate. Let dry.
  3. Transfer the pattern onto the clay canvas using a pencil and AC-230 Clay Carbon.
  4. Place all of the Stroke and Coat colors onto a tile. Note the colors on the pallet.
  5. Start with the flower center and paint in a wash of SC-55 Yella Bout It using CB-406 Pointed Round. Dry brush in some yellow into the whiter petals in three places.
  6. Shade the center with SC-23 Jack O’Lantern. Reinforce the shading on the petals next to the center with SC-75 Orange-A-Peel. Lightly dry brush a bit of SC-23 and SC-75 onto the petals. Keep these two oranges light and faint when accenting the white petals. Darken the lower part of the center with SC-81 Cinnamon Stix. Note: All detail in the center is completed using Designer Liner.
  7. When painting the colors in the petals, remember that multiple thin layers are better than heavy ones. It is easier to add more thin layers of color than to erase excess color. Dry brushing is achieved by loading the brush with color and then blotting the brush on a paper towel to remove excess color/water from the brush. Starting with SC-31 The Blues to shade the under cuts and over laps of the petals using CB-406 Pointed Round in a dry-brushing method. Start darkening the shadows with SC-76 Cara-Bein Blue. For the purple tones in the petals start with SC-13 Grapel, then SC-33 Fruit of the Vine. Continue the shading process with SC-72 Grape Jelly and then SC-40 Blueberry Hill. Do not use any Black to create the shadows on the petals.
  8. Detail some of the petals with SC-31 The Blues using CB-110 Liner.
  9. Paint in the stem of the flower with SC-72 Grape Jelly and shade with SC-40 Blueberry Hill using CB-406 Pointed Round.
  10. To detail the center of the flower start with SG-407 Yellow to make little “comma” strokes along the top portion of the flower center. Overlap these strokes over the edge of the center. Towards the middle to the lower part of the center apply some SG-408 Orange. Use SG-403 Red to add dimension to the left portion of the center. Place some dots along the orange shading in the white petal as well. The highlight in the center is done with SG-402 White just right of center.
  11. Shake and stir S-2727 Poppy Fields and apply 1-2 coats using CB-604 Soft Fan or CB-406 Pointed Round with some crystals to the background area. Watch the placement of the crystals to where there are no clusters of crystals in the background. Let dry.
  12. Using CB-406 Pointed Round and CB-110 Liner loaded with SC-15 Tuxedo to delineate the background from the flower. Shade the black out from the petals and stem edge out over the background area where it fades to nothing. Let Dry.
  13. Apply SC-40 Blueberry Hill over the crystallite areas of the background up to the edge of the petals using CB-604 Soft Fan. Work in some SC-31 The Blue as well into the background areas.
  14. Apply 1 coat of thinned S-2101 Crystal Clear Brushing over the entire canvas using CB-604 Soft Fan.
  15. Stilt and fire the pieces separately to Shelf Cone 05-06.
  16. Glue the canvas to the plate using Epoxy glue. Make sure the canvas is oriented to where the hole in the plate is at the top of the picture.
