1. Begin with properly fired shelf cone 04 bisque.  Moisten a clean sponge and wipe bisque to remove any dust.
2. Using a CB-604 Soft Fan to apply 2 coats of SC-46 Rawhide to the front surface of the piece.  Allow to dry.
3. Cut out the shape of the chicken pattern using scissors.  Wet the back of the paper with water and place on the canvas.  Position the chicken to the left of center to where the feathers are just touching the left edge of the canvas.
4. Onto a tile place SC-81 Cinnamon Stix and SC-82 Tuscan Red. Using CB-604 Soft Fan, apply 2-3 coats of color(s) to the background.  The darker SC-81 is to the left and the SC-82 to the right continuing the color over the edge of the piece.  Wet blend the colors together where they meet just left of center.  While the last coat of color is still wet lay a piece of cheesecloth in the wet color going over the edges of the piece and brush over it again.  You can blot with a paper towel to press the cheesecloth in to the wet color and help it to dry.
5. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan, dry brush SC-34 Down to Earth over the cheesecloth background creating texture to the red areas. Remove the cheesecloth and the paper from the chicken. Allow to dry.
6. Using a pencil and AC-230 Clay Carbon Paper, transfer the details of the feathers and face to the chicken.
7. Using a CB-110 #10/0 Liner, apply SC-15 Tuxedo to the eye of the chicken. Apply SC-37 Ivory tower to the beak and lower section of the face using CB-404 #4 Pointed Round.  Add some SC-42 Butter Me Up to the beak and lower section of the face. Apply some SC-74 Hot Tamale to the comb, waddle and face of the chicken. Using CB-106 Script Liner loaded with water and tipped with SC-34 Down to Earth to shade the edge of the comb where it meets the head with color. Darken with some SC-15 Tuxedo in the same manner as the brown. Shade the outside edges of the waddle in the same manner.  Paint in some circular lines around the eye with thinned SC-34 using a CB-110 #10/0 Liner. Detail the beak, waddle and face with some thinned SC-15 Tuxedo.
8. Load a CB-404 #4 Pointed Round with SC-73 Candy Apple Red and apply a pressure point stroke of color to the top (apex) portions of the comb. By applying the color in a pressure-point stroke, more color will be deposited on the top edge of the comb creating a high light.  Paint in some high lights of the SC-73 Candy Apple Red around the eye on the red portion of the face with CB-110 #10/0 Liner.  Dry brush a blush of color over the lower section of the face with some thinned SC-73 using CB-404 #4 Pointed Round.
9. To paint in the feathers on the chicken start with some thinned SC-15 Tuxedo loaded in CB-404 #4 Pointed Round.  Follow the contour and the shape as the feathers bend around the chicken.  Paint in the black head and tail feathers with the thinned color.   Darken the feathers in the head and tail with more un-thinned color. Keep a highlight in the head and tail feathers where the previous thinned color lets the underlying color peak through.
10. To the pinfeathers in the chest and wing areas, start by applying thinned SC-15 Tuxedo using CB-106 #6 Script Liner. Vary the width and shape of the lines for the feathers with the color. Using CB-110 #10/0 Liner detail these feathers further with more intense color to add depth to the previous painted lines.   Keep the lines “sketchy” in their appearance.
11. Using a CB-110 #10/0 Liner loaded with SC-16 Cotton Tail, apply a high light to each of the pinfeathers in the chest and wing. More than one coat of color may be needed to achieve color saturation.  Allow to dry.
12. Using the end point on the curved end of a Clean Up Tool, sgraffito some high lights in the black head and tail feathers. The highlighted areas are near the base of the tail feathers and over the lighter section on the head feathers.  Remove any bits of color from the sgraffitoed areas that may be on the ware.
13. Place the Damask stencil to the left of the head of the chicken. The placement of this stencil should just barely overlap the comb and yet avoid the beak and face. Using Blue Masking Tape to secure the stencil.   Using a DRY AC-213 Sponge on a Stick to apply 1-2 coats of SC-46 Rawhide to the stencil.  Keep the color lighter as it goes towards the face/head of the chicken.  Let dry.  Apply 1 light coat of SC-37 Ivory Tower over the previous painted area in the same manner.  When color as almost dried, remove the stencil.  Wash the stencil and dry.
14. Replace the Damask stencil over the lower portion of the tail/wing section of the bird.  Also place the smaller Damask stencil over toward the right of the head to where it overlaps the head feathers and back ground. Tape both stencils down again as before. Using a Dry AC-213 Sponge on a Stick apply 2-3 coats of SC-74 Hot Tamale to both stenciled areas. Before the color completely dries, remove the stencils.
15. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan, apply 1 coat of S-2101 Crystal Clear Brushing to the entire front portion of the canvas.  Allow to dry.
16. Stilt and fire to shelf cone 06/05.
