Instructions

Construction:

1. With a ball of clay about half the size of the final form, about 3 inches in diameter, make a pinch pot. To make a pinch pot: hold the ball of clay in the palm of your hand, with your other hand, press your thumb into the center of the clay, turning the ball, continue to press towards the side to form the shape of the head and mouth opening.
2. The top of the head, pointed end, is formed with another small pinch pot, then attached to the head, score the clay and add water to attach to the top of the head. Put a small hole with the the needle tool, to let air escape. Extra clay was added to the back to keep the form from falling over.
3. Roll two coils for the arms. Flatten one end by tapping the clay on a flat surface. Score and add a small amount of water to attach to the face.
4. Add a small coil to the base of the arm, smooth into the form to create a seamless connection from the head to the arm.
5. Roll a small ball of clay, use your thumb to press into a heart shape for his tonsils. Score and add a small amount of water to attach to the inside of the mouth.
6. Create two strips of clay for the teeth in a wedge shape. Using a needle tool, press in for the individual teeth. Score and add a small amount of water to attach to the inside of the mouth.
7. Roll a small ball of clay for the eyes, cut the ball in half so both eyes are the same size. Score and add a small amount of water to attach to the face.
8. Using the star pattern from CD-1078 Press Tool, press in the center of the eyes.
9. Roll out small coils for the brows. Score and add a small amount of water to attach to the face.
10. To make the roses, roll small balls of clay, press in the rose pattern from CD-1078 press tool to the ball. Add in a coil to elongate the rose. Cut lengths of 17 gauge high temp wire for the stems, add to the clay rose.
11. Let dry.
12. Fire to cone 04.

Glazing:

1. using CB-602 #2 Soft Fan, apply 3 coats of SC-2 Melon-choly to the inside of the mouth. Be sure not to apply to teeth.
2. Using CB-106 #6 Script Liner, apply three coats of SC-74 Hot Tamale, shading with SC-74 Hot Tamale, to the heart (tonsils inside of the mouth)
3. Remove any glaze from the teeth. Using CB-106 #6 Script Liner, apply two coats of SC-16 Cotton Tail to the teeth.
4. Using CB-602 #2 Soft Fan, apply 2-3 coats of SC-91 Seabreeze to the body. Before the third coat dries, add SC-11 Blue Yonder to the tip of the head to the brows, and SC-9 Jaded to the arms, fading to SC-11 Blue Yonder. Apply two coats to the fade.
5. Using CB-106 Script Liner, shade SC-29 Blue Grass to the opening of the mouth and around the eyes.
6. Using CB-106 #6 Script Liner, apply 2 coats of SC-16 Cotton Tail to the eyes. Apply SC-11 Blue Yonder for the iris and SC-15 Tuxedo for the pupil.
7. Using CB-106 #6 Script Liner, apply 2 coats of SC-74 Hot Tamale to the roses. Wipe away some of the SC-74 Hot Tamale with BT-910 Synthetic Sponge and apply S-2101 Crystal Clear to the roses.
8. Stilt and fire to shelf cone 06/05.

After firing, glue the roses and heart to the hands with hot glue, use an acrylic green to paint the stems.
