Instructions

  1. Roll clay ¼" thick.
  2. Slump the slabs of clay into both portions of a CD 777 Oval Slump & Hump Mold.
  3. Trim off the excess clay at the top of the mold, thicken the edge of the slump with a coil to make attaching the two halves easier.
  4. When the clay has hardened enough to keep its shape, cut two inches off from the bottom of the oval shapes. This will be the bottom of the cat.
  5. Score the edges with a scoring tool. Use slip that was made from the clay to wet the edges. Attach the two slump sections together.
  6. Roll out a piece of ¼" clay as a base. Note: Make sure the case is slightly larger then the bottom if the slumped form. Let it set.  Score and slip the bottom of the form and the base. Place the open end of the shape onto the base. Note: make sure the oval stands straight. Add clay coils and smooth out to fill any gaps if necessary.
  7. Lightly draw a pencil line down the center of the oval and another horizontal line two inches from the top for the eye placement. For the eyes, roll a small ball of clay. Cut the ball in half .Using the lines for placement score and slip each half to attach to the oval shape. For the eye lids, make a hollow oval shape, cut in half and attach on the upper part of the eye.
  8. Shape a triangle of clay for the nose then attach under the eyes.
  9. For the cheeks roll a larger ball. Cut it in half. Score & slip to the area beside the nose.
  10. The mouth is a coil flattened and placed under the muzzle.
  11. Cut 6 - 3 " pieces of nicron wire. Poke  the wire into the wet muzzle. Roll tiny balls of clay to fit on the ends of the wire for the whiskers.
  12. For the feet roll 4 small balls of clay. Flatten the bottom then score and slip. Attach to the bottom of the cat. Make clay marks.
  13. Not shown is a long tail that curls up the back of the cat.  Roll a long coil then score & slip and attach to the back of the cat.
  14. Cut two fat triangles the same size for the cats ears. With your thumb cup the triangles to form ears. Score and slip to attach to the top of the cats head.
  15. Place vent holes in the bottom of the cat. This will let the steam escape to avoid any bursting of the piece.
  16. Let dry thoroughly.
  17. Fire to cone 06.
  18. With a damp sponge wipe off the cat.
  19. Using a CB-604 Soft Fan Brush apply three coats of CG-954NT Wildfire to the body of the cat.
  20. Using a CB-106 Script Liner apply two coats of SC-24 Dandelion to the inside of the ears, eyelids, muzzle, tail and feet.
  21. Using a CB-106 Script Liner apply one coat of S-2729 Citrus Splash to all of the Dandelion areas. Make sure touse the crystals.
  22. Using a CB 106 Script Liner apply SC-73 Candy Apple Red mixed with some of the CG-954NT Wildfire to the mouth.
  23. Brush the nose and the balls on the whiskers with two coats of SC-15 Tuxedo. Brush the inside of the mouth with thinned SC-15 Tuxedo.
  24. Thin CG-954NT with a little water and brush over the S-2729 Citrus Splash areas; ears, eyelids, muzzle, tail & feet.
  25. Brush the eyes with two coats of SC-16 Cotton Tail. Use 2 coats of SC-25 Green Thumb for the Iris. The pupil is SC-15 Tuxedo.
  26. After all the color has dried, using a CB-106 Liner float SC-15 Tuxedo heavily around all the detail and parts of the face, feet, tail and ears for a shadow effect.
  27. Stilt & fire to cone 06.
