Instructions

  1. Write down a peronal memory on a scrap piece of paper. This will be the foundation for the memory quilt project.
  2. Select a square or rectangular piece of Bisque like MB-882 Rectangle Tray that either has a rimmed border or is shaped like a quilt. Moisten a clean sponge and wipe your bisque to remove any dust or dirt.
  3. Select 3 - 5 colors to ue in the project. SC-4 Salsa, SC-33 Fruit of the Vine, SC-40 Blueberry Hill, and SC- 52 Toad-ily Green are used in the sample.
  4. Using a No. 2 pencil, sketch in your patches around the outer edges of the plate. The rim of the plate or platter will become the "quilted" portion of the project while the center will remain open for the narrative.
  5. Once you have penciled in the patches around the outer edge of the piece, select a color to make a wash in the center of the piece. SC-52 Toad-ily Green was used in the sample. Eventually, the narrative will be written over the wash. To make a wash, dip a cotton ball into water, squeezing out the excess water. Then dip the cotton ball into your color and dab until the color and water are mixed to a watery consistency. Use a gentle swirling stroke to smear the watery Glaze over the plate.
  6. Once you have applied the wash to the center, paint each "patch" with alternating colors. You should paint each "patch" with three Coats of Glaze.
  7. After the patches have been painted and BEFORE they are completely dry, etch designs or words in the patches associated with the memory you have already written out. For example, if the memory is about sewing, a needle and thread would be a logical symbol. (Toothpicks work great for etching. As you etch, small crumbs will be created from the Glaze that is being scratched away. Ignore these crumbs. When you are all finished and the crumbs are dry, wipe them away with a DRY fan brush.)
  8. Using an under Glaze pencil, re-write your memory in the center of the piece. Be careful not to smear the pencil as you write. If you do not have an underglaze pencil you can use SC-15 Tuxedo in the AC-222 Medium Tip Writer to write your memory.
  9. Now, for the stitching. SA-002 Black Accents is a dimensional glaze that remains raised after firing.  Make small parallel lines mimicking stitching to connect the patches to one another and to the center portion of the piece. Your story quilt is done.
