Instructions

  1. Roll a 6" x 6" slab of clay no more than ½" thick and no less than ¼" thick.
  2. Using a toothpick, trace the outline of the child's right hand. Use a toothpick or a clay incising tool to cut the shape of the hand out. Leave a small "U" shape extending from the base of the palm. Make a hole in the "U" from which the ornament may hang. With some tap water and your finger, smooth the edges of the cut out.
  3. Allow to dry and fire to cone 04. You can fire at cone 06 with out any problems if you need to for efficiency.

Painting Instructions

  1. Moisten a sponge and wipe bisque to remove any dust from the bisque.
  2. Apply 3 coats of SC-74 Hot Tamale to the hat portion of the hand. You can mark this portion by making an arched line from the crux of the thumb to the opposite side of the hand with a No 2 pencil. Make another arch, naturally sloping downward to where the fingers begin.
  3. Apply 3 coats of SC-16 Cotton Tail to the 4 fingers.
  4. Apply 3 coats of SC-46 Rawhide to the "face" or palm of the hand.
  5. Pencil in the facial features before using a CB-106 #6 Script Liner and SC-15 Tuxedo to outline the eyes, mustache, and mouth. Use the liner brush and SC-15 Tuxedo to make 2 parallel arched lines around the rim of the hat.
  6. Fill the mustache in with 1 thick application of SC-16 Cotton Tail. Fill the mouth in with 1 light coat of SC-74 Hot Tamale.
  7. Make a nose using a print of the child's index finger and SC-74 Hot Tamale.
  8. Using SA-003 White Accents, make a series of long wavy lines beginning just above where you painted SC-16 Cotton Tail all the way down the fingers. Fill in the space between the 2 black parallel lines surrounding the rim of the hat with SA-003.
  9. Personalize by writing the child's name and year on the hat with SC-15 Tuxedo.
  10. Stilt and fire to shelf cone 06.
  11. Using E6000 Glue, glue a white pom pom on the tip of the thumb.
