Instructions

  1. Begin with properly fired shelf cone 04 bisque.  Moisten a clean sponge and wipe bisque to remove any dust.
  2. With a pencil and AC-230 Clay Carbon Paper transfer the pattern to the ware.
  3. Using a CB-406 #6 Pointe Round and CB-604 #4 Soft Fan to apply 2 coats of SC-31 The Blues to the background areas. For the third coat of color, introduce SC-76 Cara-bien Blue and SC-12 Moody Blue towards the lower edge of the background. With the brushes loaded with SC-31 pick up some of the darker colors and apply them in small “x” strokes. Towards the top areas, omit the darker colors and substitute SC-11 Blue Yonder in the same manner.
  4. Using a CB-406 #6 Pointed Round, apply 3 coats of SC-55 Yella Bout It to the chick. Use a smaller brush to block in 2-3 coats of SC-42 Butter Me Up to the beak.
  5. Moisten a Silk Decorating sponge with some water; remove excess water with a paper towel. Load the edge of the sponge with SC-55 Yella Bout It and “veil” the color along the edge of the chic overlapping the color onto the background giving it a “fuzzy” look.
  6. Starting with the eye, paint in some thinned (inky consistency) SC-14 Java Bean to the iris with CB-110 #10/0 Liner. Apply a second thin coat around the edge of the iris to give it shading and depth. Paint in SC-15 Tuxedo to the pupil of the eye. Thin some SC-15 Tuxedo to outline the eye, painting in the eyelashes as well.
  7. Position the pattern back over the chick with a pencil and AC-230 Clay Carbon Paper trace on the detail (tuffs) to the body.
  8. Shade the beak with some thinned SC-5 Tiger Tail and SC-14 Java Bean.  Darken and add more detail with some thinned (inky consistency) SC-15 Tuxedo.
  9. To accomplish the shading in the chick use a CB-110 #10/0 Liner loaded with SC-42 Butter Me Up. Darken this shading with some thinned (inky consistency) SC-5 Tiger Tail. Remember it is easier to apply multiple coats of thinner color than to apply heavier color. There will be more nuances in the shading by applying multiple thinner coats of color. To further darken the subtle delineations of the color and shading, apply thinned (inky consistency) of SC-14 Java Bean. Keep this color light and use sparingly.
  10. Position the larger Damask stencil above the chick on the background area of the canvas. Secure the stencil with MC-002 ½” Low Tack Masking Tape. Block off the area on the body where the stencil continues over the chick with masking tape as well.
  11. Use a DRY AC-213 Sponge-on-a-Stick loaded with SC-42 Butter Me Up and pounce on a coat of color.  Repeat this for a second coat. When the color has dried some, remove the stencil. Shade a few of the left sides of the stencil shape with some thinned SC-5 Tiger Tail.
  12. Apply the smaller Damask stencil over the lower portion of the chick body. Secure it with some masking tape.
  13. Use a DRY AC-213 Sponge-on-a-Stick loaded with SC-76 Cara-bein Blue and pounce on 1-2 coats of color.  On the second coat pick up some SC-12 Moody Blue for shading to the stencil. When the color has dried some remove the stencil. Allow to dry.
  14. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan, apply 1 coat of S-2101 Crystal Clear Brushing to the canvas.  Or if dipping apply Clear Glaze of Choice. Allow to dry.
  15. Stilt and fire to shelf cone 06/05.
