Instructions
- Take a small coin piece of moist clay about 1” dia. by ¼” thick and place it over one of the two press molds. Use your thumb to start wedging off the excess clay from the center of the mold to the outside edge. This will automatically thin the edge of the form and leaving it thicker towards the center. Remove the shape using another piece of clay to lift the form from the mold. After lifting the shape from the mold, tweak and reform the shape to give it a more natural and slightly cupped dimension. Repeat this step until you have 5-7 shapes of each of the two press molds. Use the toothpick to drill a hole in each shape. Let the shapes dry completely. Clean up the shapes and use a dampened Sponge to remove any dust.
- Bisque fire the shell and starfish shapes to shelf cone 04.
- Begin with properly fired shelf cone 04 bisque bottles and shell charms. Lightly moisten a clean sponge and wipe bisque to remove any dust.
- Place some SC-6 Sunkissed and SC-28 Blue Isle onto a tile. It is your choice in doing which color to the bottles. Rinse CB-604 #4 Soft Fan with water and tip one corner of the brush with one of the colors. Holding the color towards the bottom edge of the bottle, apply the color. Gradually shade the color up the bottle shape to where it fades to nothing. Applying more color and using water in the brush will help you create the shading. The final Umbrae look should be almost solid color near the bottom of the bottle and fading the color out to nothing about 2-3” in height. Repeat this to the remaining bottle with the other color. Allow to dry.
- Pick one shape of the shells and decide upon which shape you want to adorn which bottle. Apply the complimentary color to the desired shape.
- Using a CB-404 #4 Pointed Round loaded with water and tip the point of the brush with one of the Stroke & Coat colors. Shade the edges of the starfish charms with color. With the oyster shell shape, only shade the large end of the shell with color. The color should be heaviest at the edge of the charm fading to nothing towards the center or small edge of the appropriate shaped charm.
- Thin some FN-206 Lemon Ice with water to a heavy cream consistency in a plastic cup. Choose the matching bottle with the color on the bottle. While working quickly, pour the thinned glaze into the bottle and roll the entire inside with color. Pour out the excess color and drain upside down to dry. Wipe off any drips of color from the lip of the ware using a moistened sponge. Repeat this step with the other FN-214 Pastel Jade and matching colored bottle.
- Apply 3 even coats of matching Foundations Sheer glaze to the outside of each of the bottles. Change the directions in the applications of the glaze to ensure that the glaze doesn’t show any streaking after firing.
- Apply 3 coats of the corresponding glaze to the front side of the charms using a CB-404 #4 Pointed Round. Clean the holes out of the charms with toothpick before firing. Allow to dry.
- Stilt and fire all pieces to shelf cone 06/05.
- Choose the complimentary colored charms for each of the bottles. Using an odd number of charms for each of the bottles and fewer charms on the smaller bottle than the larger one. Thread the raffia through the hole on the charm and tie it off to where a double knot is at the top of the charm. Place a small amount of glue to the end of the knot to seal it. Repeat this to all of the charms.
- Once all of the charms have been threaded, arrange them to where they are staggered to hang on the bottle. Make a collar of raffia and tie off the charms into the collar. Place a small amount of glue to the collar knot to hold the necklace the bottleneck.
