Instructions

1. Begin with properly fired shelf cone 04 bisque. Moisten a clean sponge and wipe bisque to remove any dust.

2. Place some FN-09 Black into a small cup and add a little bit of water to slightly dilute it (about 3 parts glaze and 1 part water). It should be the consistency of a coffee cream. Pour this into the vase and roll around to completely coat the interior of the vase. Drain out the excess glaze and keep the vase inverted until it has lost its shine. Wipe off any glaze from the outside using a damp sponge. Allow to dry. 

3. Using CB-604 Soft Fan, apply 3 coats of FN-23 Cinnamon to the outside of the vase. Let dry. 

4. Trace the flower portion of the pattern onto a piece of the Clear Contact Paper using a Fine Tip Sharpie Marker. Cut out the flower with scissors. Make sure you trace and cut out the flower to where the pattern is the same as the master pattern. 

5. Trace the flower portion of the pattern to the vase. Only the rough outline is necessary at this time. Peel the back off the Clear Contact Paper and place the flower to the ware. Make sure all of the edges of the flower are sealed well with the ware. 

6. On a tile place out some SC-63 Popeye's Favorite. Moisten a Silk Decorating Sponge with water. A Silk Decorating Sponge is needed, as a synthetic or other type of sponge will give you a different texture and look. You are trying to give the look of aribrushed color. Dip one edge of the sponge with color and pounce on the tile to blend the color in the sponge. Pounce the color edge of the sponge along the edge of the "masked" flower. Blend the color so it is darkest at the edge of the flower out to nothing about 1 to 2 inches away from the flowers edge. This color may need more than one coat. There should be no harsh start and stop lines to the color as it should blend from dark color out to nothing. Let dry.

7. Place SC-14 Java Bean, SC-34 Down To Earth, and SC-15 Tuxedo out on a tile. Starting with SC-14 Java Bean, load the damp sponge as in Step 6. Sponge in the color over the background of the vase, lightly bringing it to the faded color around the flower.

8. Reload the sponge with SC-34 Down to Earth and now concentrate on pouncing color along the rim and bottom of the vase. This color should extend from the lip of the vase down to the hip of the vase. From the bottom, the color extends upward about 2 inches to meet the color below the bottom petal of the flower.

9. Reload the sponge with Sc-15 Tuxedo. This color just reinforces the Down to Earth color and is more concentrated along the top and bottom edge of the vase. An overall view of the colors should be black along the top and bottom edges fading to dark brown to the lightest brown in the middle. You should have a green area around the flower that fades into the background color without noticeable delineation. 

10. Once the colors have been applied, remove the contact paper from the vase. If the color is very dry, lightly sponge some water to the edge of the contact paper to avoid chipping off the color. Using CB-310 Flat Shader and CB-404 Pointed Round, fill in two coats of SC-81 Cinnamon Stix to the flower, bud, and calyx. Let dry. 

11. Retrace the leaves and stem of the flower using a pencil and AC-230 Clay Carbon. 

12. Using CB-310 Flat Shader, load with SC-23 Jack-O-Lantern to paint in the four petals on the flower. The stroke is similar to a print stroke. Reload te brush with SC-23 and tip with SC-75 Orange-A-Peel. Apply another coat to the petals. Streak in some SC-23 to the horn of the flower using CB-404 Pointed Round. Reinforce this color with a couple of lines of thinned SC-75 using CB-110 Liner. Paint in the stamen with SC-75 using CB-110 Liner. 

13. Using CB-110 Liner loaded with SC-79 It's Sage, apply two coats to the stems of the flower and leaves. Keep the lines as fine as possible. Shade one side of the stems with thinned SC-63 Popeye's Favorite and SC-14 Java Bean to define the edges and give them some shading. 

14. To paint in the leaves and calyzes load CB-404 Pointed Round with SC-79 It's Sage. Use a "pressure point" stroke to paint in the calyzes of the flower. When the brush has been loaded well with color and you make the pressure point stroke you will notice that the color forms thicker deposits of color along the edge creating the shading. The underlying color may and should show through. 

15. The leaves are completed with two strokes o the bruch for each leaf. The back portion of the leaf is painted first, and then the top stroke which will create the veins in the leaf. Again some of the underlying color may/should show through the strokes. 

16. Some shading can be done in the leaves with some thinned SC-14 java bean is needed.
