Instructions

  1. Begin with properly fired shelf cone 04 bisque. Moisten a clean sponge and wipe bisque to remove any dust.
  2. In a plastic mixing cup, place 2 parts UG-50 Jet Black with 1/2 part C-300 Matte Transparent. Mix Well. Using CB-604 Soft Fan loaded with underglaze mixture, apply 3 even and smooth coats to the exterior of the bisque Canvas. Let Dry. Reserve any leftover color should there be a repair of the background color during painting of the piece.
  3. Trace the pattern of the pencil onto the shirt cardboard. Cut out with scissors to make a template. Trace the template onto the ware allowing about 1/4” between the pattern.
  4. Use MC-001 to tape off the outline of each pencil. Use the Blue Masking tape to mask off the larger background areas of the canvas behind the pencils.
  5. Using CB-604 Soft Fan loaded with SG-501 Sculpting Medium, apply one even coat to each pencil shape. Apply the Medium in one direction lengthwise. The product can be thinned slightly by dipping the brush in water before painting to ease in the even application. Let dry.
  6. Use CB-406 Pointed Round to apply a thin even coat of UG-57 Spice brown to the exposed wood portions of the sharpened pencil areas. Shade the left side of the wooden areas with some thinned UG-100 Terra Cotta.
  7. Using AB-705 Round loaded with SG-501 Sculpting Medium to apply one heavy coat to the three sections of the pencil. Keep the top edge of each section rounded. Apply a second coat to the middle section. This will give you dimension and texture to the pencil body. Use the curved end of a Clean Up tool to remove excess Sculpting Medium off the taped areas along the edge of the pencils. Carefully use a sponge to wipe off any medium off the taped areas. Let dry.
  8. On a tile/pallet place the 18 colors of Stroke and Coats in groups of hues and denote the number using a Sharpie Marker. i.e. the red shades; SC-81 (dark), SC-74 (bright or true) and SC-73 (lightest), orange; SC-95, SC-23 (add a drop or two of SC-75 to SC-23) and SC-24, white: SC-60, SC-16 and SC-86, blue; SC-12, SC-76 and SC-31, green; SC-36 (add a drop or two of SC-15 to SC-36), SC-8 and SC-7, teal; SC-10, SC-28 and SC-9. The darkest colors will be on your left side of the pencil body, medium/true or brightest colors are in the center and lightest are on the right section.
  9. Start with one pencil and paint one coat of the lightest color to the right section of one pencil. To the middle section paint in the brightest/ truest color of each hue and to the left paint in the darkest tone of each hue using CB-406 Pointed Round. Let each coat dry between applications. Apply 3 coats of color to each section of each pencil. Overlapping the colors during applications will give a better blended look to the final overall appearance of the colors.
  10. After all of the pencil bodies have been painted with three coats of colors and before the colors have completely dried, remove the tape from the piece. If the color has become too dry, remoisten the edges with clean water where the color and tape meet before removing. This will help alleviate any chipping of the color and Sculpting Medium. If the color and or Medium are chipped, repair the damaged area with color only.
  11. To the pencil tips, apply the lightest color to the left side of the pencil tip and shade with the darkest color on the right portion of the pencil tip. Apply two coats using CB-110 Liner of each color.
  12. Before firing, check the edges of the pencil shapes for any white areas showing of the Sculpting Medium and paint over these areas. This includes the wooden areas of the pencils as well.
  13. Stilt and fire the piece to Shelf Cone 05-06.

Note: Should there be any pull backs or flaws in the final look of the piece, you can reapply some of the appropriate color and re-fire to fix the problem.
