Instructions

  1. Begin with properly fired shelf cone 04 bisque.  Moisten a clean sponge and wipe bisque to remove any dust.  Check the inside of the vase to remove any debris that may be in it as well.
  2. Cut a piece of Contact Paper approximately 7”x 9” large.  This should allow about 1” or more around the fish pattern.  Trace the fish portion of the pattern onto the Contact Paper. Cut out the fish using an X-Acto Knife while placed on the scrap of cardboard.   Remove the paper backing from the plastic top. Place the Contact stencil onto the ware referring to the pattern and photo for placement.  Make sure all the edges of the Contact Paper are firmly attached to the ware.
  3. Onto a tile/pallet pour out some of the following colors: UG-10 Crimson, UG-51 Jet Black, UG-92 Lilac and UG-146 Pink Pink.
  4. Moisten a Silk Decorating Sponge and wick out any excess water using a paper towel. Load the sponge with UG-146 Pink Pink and pounce on 1 coat to the stencil cut out. The effect should be a fine pebble like surface.  Allow to dry.
  5. Reload the sponge and tip with UG-92 Lilac and sponge over the stencil area blending the Lilac color from the edge of the fish towards the center. You should have a blending of the lilac along all the edges and a pink highlight towards the center of the fish.  If the color is too wet before you apply the next coat of color, the previous color will be lifted off.  Let the color dry slightly before more shading and application of color(s).
  6. Reload the sponge with UG-92 Lilac and tip with UG-10 Crimson. Shade the top of the fish down along the face and back to the gills. The color is heaviest from the mouth back to the gills. Continue with the ends/tips of the back fins and lower side fins. Refer to the photo if necessary. The crimson color should blend into the fish without any delineation of color.
  7. Tip the sponge with some UG-51 Jet Black and darken the previous crimson color on the fin tips and head. The black is heaviest from the mouth back to the gills. Let the color dry.
  8. Using a CB-406 #6 Pointed Round loaded with UG-10 Crimson and paint in the dorsal Fin using a “Pressure Point” stroke.
  9. Squeeze out some SG-401 Black Designer Liner onto a tile. Using a CB-110 #10/0 Liner loaded with the black color.  Paint on a line to define and reinforce the edges of the tail fin and lower side fins. This line will vary in width along the edge. Generally it is thicker towards the darker or blacker areas on the fins. Paint in some black dots along the bottom of the fish belly. Detail the head with two soft “S” lines that define the head and gills of the fish (refer to photo). Paint in a “Pressure Point stroke between the previous strokes on the dorsal fin. Add a dot over each of these strokes.
  10. Freehand or retrace the sea grass onto the vase using a pencil and AC-230 Clay Carbon Paper.
  11. Load a CB-106 #6 Script Liner with UG-211 Olive and paint in the sea grass in the pattern (refer to photo) using a “Point Pressure Point” stroke.  Load a CB-110 #10/0 Liner with UG-58 Harvest Gold and paint in the remaining sea grass in the pattern.  If you want the color stronger, apply 2 coats to the sea grasses.
  12. Using a Clean Up Tool to sgraffito the lines in the fins on the tail and lower fins.   Try to keep these lines straight and fine. Refer to the photo for the placement of these sgraffitoed lines. Sgraffito three lines that mirror the lines in the head to denote the gill area (refer to photo). Sgraffito some lines in the sea grasses as well.
  13. Paint in some dots of color over in the tail and lower fins of the fish with UG-19 Ultra Blue using CB-106 #6 Script Liner. Add a smaller dot of UG-93 Wild Violet over the blue dots. Paint in some UG-93 Wild Violet dots of color in the belly of the fish around the previously painted black ones.
  14. Paint in the eye with UG-19 Ultra Blue with CB-110 #10/0 Liner. Add a pupil of SG-401 Black Designer Liner. Sgraffito a line around the back half of the eye.
  15. Fire the piece to shelf cone 04.
  16. Place some FN-018 Bright Blue into a small cup and add a little bit of water to slightly dilute it (about 3 parts glaze and 1 part water).  It should be the consistency of a coffee cream.  Pour this into the vase and roll around to completely coat the interior of the vase.  Drain out the excess glaze and keep vase inverted until it has lost its shine. Wipe off any glaze from the outside using a damp sponge. Allow to dry.
  17. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan, apply 2 coats of S-2101 Crystal Clear Brushing to the outside of the vase.  Allow to dry.
  18. Stilt and fire the piece to shelf cone 06/05.
