Instructions

  1. Begin with properly fired shelf cone 04 bisque. Moisten a clean sponge and wipe bisque to remove any dust.
  2. Using CB-604 #4 Soft Fan, apply 3 smooth and even coats of UG-50 Jet Black to the inside of the mixing bowls. Bring the black up onto the top edge of the mixing bowls. Wipe off any color from the outside of the bowls with a moistened sponge.
  3. All of the bowls are painted in a similar manner. The first step is to center the bowl upside down onto the banding wheel. Try to center it by eyeing first before testing the ware for “center” on the wheel. Rotate the wheel and check the alignment of the bowl. Tap the bowl to “center” while rotating the wheel.
  4. Using a pencil mark up from the wheel head (top edge of bowl is resting on the wheel head) up 1 ½ inches alongside of the bowl, mark the second line 3/16” from the first mark. Continue marking a line at the following intervals, 5/8”, 5/8”, 1/8”, ½”, 3/8”, 1/8”, ½” for the final line. Make these marks dark enough to see while rotating the ware. Spin the Banding Wheel and while bracing your hand along the table top, hold the pencil on any given mark to complete a line around the ware. Stop the wheel. Make an “X” on the sections that you will be filling in with color.
  5. On a palette, place UG-1 Kings Blue, UG-19 Electra Blue and UG-68 Spring Green. First band will be UG-1, followed by UG-50, space, UG-19, UG-50, space, UG-68, UG-50, space and line of UG-50. The colors may need to be slightly thinned with some water to flow freely while painting the stripes/ bands on the bowl. Start with UG-1 loaded in a CB-106 #6 Script Liner and use the table to support your elbow so you can paint your line. While spinning the bowl, paint a fine line on the line for the first section of color. 3 coats of Underglaze need to be applied for proper coverage. Allow the each coat to dry before applying the next coat(s). When removing the brush from the ware, keep the bowl spinning to alleviate any stop and start marks. Once the area to be painted has been defined by a “line”, you can fill in the area with CB-604 #4 Soft Fan and 2 more coats of color. If the area is too large to use the full width of the brush, turn it so the side of the brush can be employed for filling in the smaller areas. Repeat this process with the three colors to their appropriate areas.
  6. Once the three colors are banded to the ware, load the CB-106 #6 Script Liner with UG-50 Jet Black to paint in the lines on each of the colors and single line on the bowl. 3 coats are needed for the black lines. Make sure all of the sections are painted well before removing the piece from the banding wheel. It is difficult to reposition the ware exactly as you had it. Let dry.
  7. The Medium Mixing Bowl line marking are as follows; 1 3/8”, 3/16”, 5/8”, 5/8”, 1/8”, 5/8”, ¼”, 1/8”, ½”. Use the same brushes as before to fill in the sections with UG-93 Wild Violet, UG-87 Regal Purple and UG-146 Pink Pink.
  8. For the Small Mixing Bowl line markings, they are as follows: 1 1/8”, ¼”, ½”, 7/16”, 1/8”, 3/8”, 1/8”, 1/16”, 3/8”. The colors used are completed as in previous steps using UG-207 Flame Red, UG-204 Orange and UG-203 Squash Yellow.
  9. Allow the ware to dry before applying SW-001 Stoneware Clear. Apply 2-3 smooth and even coats of glaze to the ware using CB-604 #4 Soft Fan. DO NOT Paint the foot of the bowl where they will sit on the kiln washed shelves. Make sure no glaze is on the foot of the pieces prior to firing.
  10. Do not stilt the ware. On a kiln washed shelf, place the pieces and fire to shelf cone 5-6. Mid-range High fire.
