Instructions

  1. Begin with properly fired shelf cone 04 bisque. Moisten a clean sponge and wipe bisque to remove any dust.
  2. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan, apply 3 coats of SC-79 It's Sage to the interior surfaces of the plates and bowl . To the cup, apply SC-79 It's Sage only to the outside top portion of the cup.
  3. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan and apply 3 coats of SC-48 Camel Back to the flat rims of the bowl and plates. To the handle of the cup, apply SC-48 Camel Back using a CB-404 #4 Pointed Round. This color can be carried over onto the back surfaces or SC-15 Tuxedo may be applied to the backs of the plate and bowl instead of the brown.
  4. The interior of the cup is SC-25 Crackerjack applied using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan.
  5. Using a Black & Gold # 8 Flat Wave Brush (Dynasty) loaded with SC-51 Poo Bear tipped with SC-25 Crackerjack Brown, apply 2 coats in a basket pattern in 4 even rows around the lower section of the cup. This consist of a longer horizontal line with a short horizontal line between horizontal strokes.
  6. Trace the leaves to the piece using AC-230 Clay Carbon Paper or freehand on the leaves.
  7. It is easiest to start the painting with the stem, keeping the brush on "point" and then follow through with the end leaf using the "Pressure Point" stroke to complete it in one continuous stroke. Then paint the opposing individual leaves off of the stem.
  8. Using a CB-106 #6 Script Liner loaded with SC-39 Army Surplus, stroke in the leaves in a "Pressure Point" stroke starting from the stem outward.
  9. Divide the rims of the plates into six equal portions using the measuring tape, compass or plate divider template. Sketch in the rattan first using a pencil allowing approximately for 1/8 inch width for each of them. This is a straight line with two lines crossing in an "X" pattern. The lines converge slightly towards the inner rim.
  10. Using a CB-404 #4 Pointed Round loaded with SC-51 Poo Bear, apply 3 coats to paint in the embossed rattan. Shade the rattan lines with SC-25 Crackerjack Brown and detail with some thinned SC-34 Down To Earth using a CB-220 #2 Detail Liner on all pieces including the cup.
  11. Using a  #12 Flat Shader side loaded (¼ tipped) with SC-34 Down To Earth, shade the background areas behind the rattan on the plates and bowl. Shade the area next to where the handle meets the cup wall. Detail the edge of the shading next to the rattan lines with SC-15 Tuxedo using a CB-110 #10/0 Liner. Allow to dry.
  12. Apply S-2101 Crystal Clear Brushing to the inner sections of the cup, plates and bowl using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan. The only sections not glazed are the handle to the cup and where the Cobblestone glaze will be applied on the flat rims of the plate and bowl.
  13. Condition a CB-110 #10/0 Liner with AC-525 Brush Cleaner. Apply 1 heavy coat of AC-302 Wax Resist to the rattan on the plates and bowls. It may be beneficial to apply 1 coat of AC-302 Wax Resist to any areas where the Cobblestone glaze is NOT to be applied. Use a conditioned brush sized for these areas. Allow to dry.
  14. Apply 1 coat of SG-201 Black Cobblestone using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan to the flat portions of the plates, bowl and handle of the cup. Try not to cover the waxed areas if possible. The glaze should "bead" up and off of the waxed areas. If any color is left on the waxed areas, remove any Cobblestone glaze with a damp sponge or brush while it is wet. When the first coat of Cobblestone glaze has lost its shine, but still damp, apply a second coat of SG-201 Black Cobblestone. The SG-201 Black Cobblestone glaze when applied thinly will produce a fine webbing of black crackle over the brown Stroke and Coat. Heavier applications will produce larger and rougher texture. Two medium coats of Cobblestone glaze should be sufficient. Check for any excess glaze remaining on the waxed areas and remove it before firing. Allow to dry
  15. Stilt and fire all pieces to shelf cone 06.
