Stoneware Crab Platter

Instructions

1. Begin with properly fired shelf cone 04 bisque.  Moisten a clean sponge and wipe bisque to remove any dust

2. Using CB-604 Soft Fan to apply 2 coats of UG-51 China White to the front and back up to the foot of the platter. Do not apply any underglaze onto the foot or center-back of the platter. Using BT-901 Sponge to apply 2 coats more in a pouncing motion over the previously applied underglaze. The sponging will give you a fine pebble texture.

3. Fire the ware to Shelf Cone 04-05. Do not stilt.

4. Transfer the design onto the platter using a pencil and AC-230 Clay Carbon.

5. On a tile pour out some of each color about the side of a half dollar coin and note them in some manner.

6. A watercolor technique uses water and color to create a see-thru look to the colors. Colors are applied lightest to darkest generally when doing this technique. Using
CB-108 Script Liner moistened with water, tip the brush tip/end of the brush into UG-203 Squash Yellow. While holding the brush at an angle to the ware, start applying the color to the crab shell. The tip of the brush as well as the belly of the brush should be lying flat on the ware for the most part. The water in the brush will draw the color out to a seamless blending of the color and background. The brush can be patted up and down to do larger areas also. There should not be any harsh lines of color anywhere during the painting process. Blending of colors should happen when the other colors are applied in the same process. Continue the painting process with the other colors. It is easiest to do one section of the crab at a time like the shell; One section of the claw, then another moving down the each leg rather than doing all of the yellow on the pattern. UG-10 Crimson will fade slightly producing a mauve tone in combination with the UG-92 Lilac for those areas. Use UG-1 Kings blue to accent the UG-97 Bright Blue. UG-206 Fire Engine Red is used to accent the orange areas. UG-209 Jade works well with UG-19 Electra Blue. UG-57 Harvest Gold and UG-100 Terra Cotta can be used to darken UG-203. Use the colors in contrasting and complimentary combinations as you work through the pattern.

7. Use UG-100 Terra Cotta loaded in CB-406 Pointed Round to accent the fold in the shell.

8. Shake and stir all of the Designer Liners.   Starting with SG-404 Blue to do most of detailing of the pattern. Notice that the line isn’t always a solid continuous line. The line can be broken and consisting of dots of color. Almost all of the edges of the crab are done in Blue. Accents of SG-403 Red are done along mostly along the Fire Engine Red areas. SG-408 Orange is used to further accent the Red Designer Liner areas.

9. Load AC-219 Designer Bottle with Writer Tip SC-74 Hot Tamale and run a line of color along the top crevice in the platter’s rim/edge. Clean Bottle with water. Reload the bottle with SC-75 Orange-A-Peel and repeat this process along the second/middle crevice. Clean Bottle with water. Reload the bottle with SC-12 Moody Blue and finish filling in the crevice next to the platter’s main field. Wash Bottle with water.

10. Let Dry.

11. Using CB-604 Soft Fan loaded with SW-001 Stoneware Clear to apply 3 coats of glaze to the background and over the design of the platter’s front. Do not apply glaze past the SC-12 Moody Blue line of color on the edge trim.

12. Using CB-406 Pointed Round and CB-604 Soft Fan to apply 3 coats of SW-112 Tiger’s Eye to the edge of the platter where the crab pattern begins and ends around the plate’s edge. On the back side of the platter apply the Tiger’s Eye to approximately the same half of the back edge. Do not apply past the foot or to the center of the back of the platter. To the remaining half of the top rim/edge of the platter apply 3 coats of SW-101 Stoned Denim. Overlap the colors where they meet slightly to blend the edges. Repeat this on the back of the platter excluding the foot and center of the platter’s back.

13. Use a wet sponge to wipe off any glaze that is on the foot or center back of the platter. No glaze should be left on the platter’s footing. This is to ensure that there isn’t any glaze left on these areas. Since the piece isn’t stilted and must sit flat on the kiln shelf during the firing, any glaze left on these areas will cause your piece to stick to the kiln shelf.

14. Place the platter on a kiln shelf and Fire to Shelf Cone 5-6. This is a mid-range high-fire temperature. Do not stilt the piece during firing.
