The Tiny Seed

Begin this 'Mom and Me' project by reading Eric Carle's book, "The Tiny Seed." The project is based on the book and the flowers the child and parent create look much like the artwork from the book. You may also want to give your 'Mom and Me' program a packet of seeds to plant in the cup/pot. I am also going to get watering cans for the kids to decorate. Spring is in the air -- make an event out of it!

Instructions

  1. Begin with properly fired shelf cone 04 Bisque. Moisten a clean sponge and wipe bisque to remove any dust.
  2. Using a pencil, approximately 2" from the handle of the cup, begin making 1.5" "stems" every two or so inches. You should be able to fit 4 flowers on the mug this way.
  3. Using a CB-110 #10/0 Liner, paint a thin line of SC-8 Just Froggy over each pencil stem.
  4. Dip the child's pointer finger in SC-8 Just Froggy and make a single dot about 1/2" above each single stem line.
  5. Dip the finger again and make a "v" with the finger prints just beneath each stem to create leaves.
  6. Alternating between SC-74 Hot Tamale and SC-75 Orange-A-Peel, make petals around the center of each flower by placing single fingerprints around the green center of the flower. Don't worry about cleaning the finger as when you switch colors as they may blend.
  7. Using a sea sponge, sponge SC-74 Hot Tamale and SC-75 Orange-A-Peel around the rim of the mug and along each side of the handle. Do the same thing using SC-8 Just Froggy around the rim of the saucer.
  8. Use a spatter brush to create specks of colors all over the mug (inside and out) and all over the saucer.
  9. Roll the spatter brush in SC-33 Fruit of the Vine and then spin the outer component while moving the brush over the mug and suacer. Repeat this process using SC-42 Butter Me Up, SC-75 Orange-A-Peel, and SC-74 Hot Tamale.
  10. Using a CB-110 #10/0 Liner with SC-15 Tuxedo, outline the flower petals and leaves of each flower.
  11. Add any additional personalization desired.
  12. Apply Clear Glaze (optional). Allow to dry.
  13. Stilt and fire to shelf cone 06.
