Instructions

  1. Roll out clay ¼ inch thick between wooden slats. Place pattern over wet clay and cut out with the fettling knife. This is the frame that everything is attached to.
  2. Roll some more clay a little thinner. Using the CD-1079 Continuous Design Press Tool with the key design, roll in a curve on the thinner clay. Cut out pieces for the top and the bottom of the frame. Attach to the top and the bottom of the frame with a clay slurry or slip.
  3. Use the square spiral from CD-1078 Press Tools to make the square shapes. Roll balls of clay and press onto the spiral shape. Pinch off the excess clay so the shape resembles what is shown. Attach to the frame on the diagonal with slip.
  4. Allow piece to dry throughly.
  5. Bisque fire to shelf cone 04.
  6. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan, apply 2 coats of El-120 Black Ice to the entire piece, except the back. Before the last coat is dry, sponge off the tops of the detail, not sponging real clean as it looks best messy.
  7. Using a CB-106 Script Liner, apply 2 coats of SC-25 Crackerjack Brown to the continuous design plus a couple of the spiral squares.
  8. Using a CB-106 Script Liner, apply 2 coats of SC-16 Cotton Tail to the light squares and SC-74 Hot Tamale to the red squares.
  9. Make sure there is no glaze on the back of the piece.
  10. Stilt and fire to shelf cone 06.
  11. Glue Photo Frame Easel Back to frame. This works better if you clamp it.
