1. Begin with properly fired shelf cone 04 bisque.  Moisten a clean sponge and wipe bisque to remove any dust.
2. Cut out the pattern to just around the basic shape.  This will facilitate the pattern fitting better to the bowl. Place AC-230 Clay Carbon Paper under the pattern. Using a pencil trace the basic outlines of the flower sections. Trace some of the directional lines in the petals for later guidance when painting in these lines.
3. Load a CB-406 #6 Pointed Round with water and tip the brush in SC-11 Blue Yonder.  Keeping the color to the line, place the brush on its side and shade the various petals with color. The color should be darkest next to the line and fading out onto the petal area.  If there is a harsh line of color, you can “soften” the edge of color with a rinsed brush full of clear water and slightly scrubbing the “harsh” line of color.   This isn’t a good habit to get into though.  Practice doing the shading correctly the first time if possible.
4. Using the same brush loaded in the same manner to apply SC-5 Tiger Tail to the center of the flower. The tipped point of the brush keep to the outer edge of the flower center.
5. Use a pencil to trace a line about ½” from the lip of the bowl. Then trace in another line about 1/8” from the first line.  Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan loaded with SC-53 Purple Haze, apply 2 coats of color to the larger band around the bowl edge. Use the brush to its full advantage as you paint in this section.  Hold the brush flat along the bowl to apply the color. This will give you a more even coat of color and complete the area with the fewest strokes while optimally applying the color.  Apply 1-2 coats of SC-52 Toad-ily Green to the band below the purple band using a CB-406 #6 Pointed Round.
6. Shake and stir SG-401 Designer Liner. Attach the metal tip.  Shake the color to the tip of the bottle.  This will overcome any air pockets and the “burping” of the color while painting your lines.  Always test the color on a piece of paper prior to actually painting on the piece. Paint in the lines separating the petals, the stamens in the flower center and the directional detail lines in the petals.  Keep the lines moving in the same direction and uneven in their length for the directional shading lines.  Refer to the pattern for clarification to these detail lines. If possible use the bottle to where you are pulling the bottle tip towards you rather than pushing the tip away from you.  Rotate the bowl to help you paint in the lines easily.  This will also help overcome clogging of the metal tip.
7. Squirt out a small amount of the color from the SG-401 Detail Liner onto a tile.  Using a CB-110 #10/0 Liner, paint over the lines on the petal separations.   This will create a wider and more even line to delineate the petal sections.  Allow to dry.
8. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan to apply 2 coats of S-2101 Crystal Clear Brushing to the entire piece.  Allow to dry.
9. Stilt and fire to shelf cone 05/06.
