Instructions

  1. Create a slab ¼" thick (place a piece of clay on a canvas-covered board, inbetween ¼" wooden slats, and flatten with a rolling pin).
  2. Earthenware clay will shrink approximately 6% during abisque fire, stoneware approximately 11%.  When printing your patterns and/or cutting your clay shapes, you will need to account for this shrinkage by resizing the images (by 6% or 11%) OR cutting a wider area around each pattern.
  3. Place templates on clay and cut out shape. Place a small hole at the top for a hanging hook, ribbon or string.
  4. Use a sponge to smooth the edges and any imperfections.  Place the clay cut-outs between boards of sheet rock to dry as this will keep them from warping.
  5. When sufficient dry fire to cone 04.
  6. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan apply three coats of your choice of glaze colors.
  7. When dry, mix SC-15 Tuxedo with AC-310 Silkscreen Medium with a palette knife, to the consistency of peanut butter. Place screen that matches the template you used and rub the thickened Tuxedo over the screen. Lift and clean the screen (familiarize yourself with silk screen instructions).
  8. When dry, apply one coat of S-2101 Crystal Clear Brushing to the face of the ornament and two coats to the back.
  9. Fire to cone 05/06.
