Simulate a "wooden look" with a few simple brushstrokes and Stroke & Coat.

1. Begin with properly fired shelf cone 04 bisque. Moisten a clean sponge and wipe bisque to remove any dust.
2. Draw or trace (using AC-230 Clay Carbon Paper) a flower pattern onto your surface.
3. Place a small amount of SC-46 Rawhide, SC-25 Crackerjack Brown, SC-48 Camel Back, SC-14 Java Bean, and SC-34 Down To Earth onto your palette. Slightly thin each color with water.
4. Load a RB-144 #4 Soft Fan in SC-46 Rawhide and streak across the piece using parallel strokes to start to simulate the wood grain. Working from light to dark, continue building the grain but each time only loading the edge of the brush to create a gradual color change. Keep following the grain lines created with the SC-46 Rawhide as you add more colors to the piece.
5. Using a RB-108 #8 Flat Shader, load color to one edge and pull in more defined grain marks with any of the brown tones.
6. Load a RB-104 #4 Liner in SC-14 Java Bean and create oval spirals to give the illusion of knot holes where desired. Lightly brush over them with a dampened soft fan brush to slightly blur the lines.
7. Using a toothbrush, load with some SC-14 Java Bean and SC-34 Down to Earth and randomly spatter some color to give a worm hole look to some areas.
8. Use all of the remaining colors listed. Using the RB-116 #6 Round, apply 1 light coat of color to fill in the design areas. The color should look semi-transparent as to allow the wood grain to show through. Apply 1 coat as follows: SC-23 Jack O' Lantern - outer edges of the flower petals; SC-73 Candy Apple Red - remaining petal area; SC-6 Sunkissed - flower centers; SC-27 Sour Apple - leaves; SC-26 Green Thumb - dark area on leaves; SC-11 Blue Yonder - background on flower area; and SC-34 Down To Earth - shadow around the circle insert.
9. Apply Clear Glaze.
